Good or Bad, What You Focus on Expands

You find what you look for so look for

I need to take my own advice.

I reread this piece below (written before my international move to Korea), and it reminded me of why my attitude of late has been more irksome than inspirational.

I’ve been paying attention to the wrong things lately, rather than focusing on what’s new, good, and positive about my life right now.

After I re-read my old piece, I realized that my negative mindset started climbing for several distinct reasons:

South Korea’s Covid numbers have spiked again

Ever since I arrived, I’ve noticed how diligent Koreans are about wearing masks in public spaces, indoors and outdoors. I honestly have never seen a Korean without his or her mask. The citizens of Korea cannot be blamed for the spikes in infections.

The reason their Covid numbers are spiking is lack of access to the vaccine. Only 20 percent of the country’s population has been vaccinated, according to Reuters Covid Tracker. For the sixth day in a row, more than 1,000 coronavirus cases have been reported in Seoul; stricter social distancing and masks are their only defense. It’s sad, really.

What all this means to me — an American affiliated with the U.S. Army at Camp Humphreys — is I now have only limited access to travel and activities around Korea.

I’m stuck at home again because of Covid, and I’m annoyed. It’s no one’s fault, it just is.

Afghanistan has fallen to the Taliban

After 20 year, lost lives, and millions of dollars spent, it is now obvious that Afghanistan was a quagmire that was never going to end. There’s so much pain and anguish, it’s hard to watch news coverage and to know the reality so many women and young girls are going to face. Heart-breaking is not a big enough word to describe the situation.
